PSHE and RSE
Our PSHE and RSE Curriculum Vision at Drybrook Primary School
Intent: Supporting Confident, Resilient and Respectful Individuals
At Drybrook Primary School, we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE), alongside Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), plays a vital role in supporting children to understand themselves, others and the world around them. Through our PSHE and RSE curriculum, we aim to develop confident, resilient and emotionally literate pupils who are equipped to make informed choices and build positive relationships throughout their lives.
We want all children to leave Drybrook Primary School with a strong sense of self-worth, the ability to recognise and manage their emotions, and the confidence to contribute positively to society. Our curriculum supports children to develop empathy, respect and an understanding of difference, whilst also promoting positive mental health and well-being in an ever-changing world.
Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is child-centred and rooted in our school values. It supports children to understand how they fit into their family, school and wider community, and how their actions can impact others. By fostering emotional awareness, resilience and self-belief, we prepare pupils not only for their next stage of education but for life beyond school.
Implementation: A Progressive and Structured Curriculum
From September, Drybrook Primary School delivers PSHE and RSE through the Kapow Primary scheme. Kapow provides a carefully sequenced, spiral curriculum that revisits and builds on key knowledge, skills and understanding year on year. This ensures learning is progressive, age appropriate and clearly aligned with statutory guidance for Relationships Education and Health Education.
PSHE and RSE are taught regularly across the school, beginning in the Early Years and continuing through to Year 6. Lessons are designed to be engaging, inclusive and supportive, encouraging discussion, reflection and meaningful participation. Children are given opportunities to explore real-life scenarios, develop problem-solving skills and practise strategies for managing emotions and relationships.
The curriculum is organised around key themes including families and relationships, health and wellbeing, safety and the changing body, citizenship and economic wellbeing. These themes ensure that pupils develop a secure understanding of personal safety, respectful relationships, physical and mental health, online safety and their role within society. RSE is taught sensitively and appropriately, using correct terminology and clear explanations that are matched to pupils' developmental stages.
Kapow also supports the development of British Values and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMS) education, ensuring that learning reflects the wider ethos and values of Drybrook Primary School.
Impact: Preparing Children for Life Beyond the Classroom
Through our PSHE and RSE curriculum, pupils develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to navigate modern life with confidence. They learn to manage their emotions, build healthy relationships, respect difference and make informed choices about their physical and mental wellbeing.
By the time children leave Drybrook Primary School, they are equipped to approach challenges with resilience, demonstrate empathy and respect towards others, and understand how to keep themselves safe. They develop a positive self-image, a strong sense of identity and the confidence to contribute actively and responsibly to their community.
