PSHE and RSE

Our PSHE and RSE Curriculum Vision at Drybrook Primary School

Intent: Cultivating Active, Informed, and Mindful Individuals

At Drybrook Primary School, we are committed to delivering a comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) programme that develops our pupils' emotional literacy, social skills, and spiritual growth. We strive to empower our children to recognise and articulate their emotions, regulate their behaviour, and engage positively with the diverse society around them.

We believe that by the time children leave Drybrook Primary, they should be equipped with not only the knowledge and understanding but also the empathy and emotional intelligence to be active, positive, and successful individuals. We aim to inspire high aspirations, instil self-belief, and imbue our children with the confidence that they can achieve their potential. Recognising the complexities of the ever-changing world, we prepare our pupils to navigate life's challenges with robust mental health and well-being.

Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is child-centred, designed to help pupils understand their place in the world and contribute meaningfully. We place a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, resilience, and nurturing both mental and physical health. Our curriculum includes mindfulness practices to enhance emotional awareness, concentration, focus, and self-regulation.

Implementation: A Structured and Engaging Programme

Our PSHE programme, implemented through a weekly session in EYFS and bi-weekly from KS1, utilises a whole-school approach to ensure a consistent and progressive learning experience. The curriculum encompasses statutory Relationships and Health Education, providing relevant learning experiences that enable pupils to build positive relationships with themselves and others.

The curriculum is organised into six half-termly themes, allowing the entire school to focus on the same learning themes at the same level appropriate for their age. These themes cover a breadth of topics, including:

1. Being Me in My World: Understanding one's place in the class, school, and global community.

2. Celebrating Difference: Embracing diversity and understanding anti-bullying principles.

3. Dreams and Goals: Setting personal and communal aspirations, and working collaboratively.

4. Healthy Me: Fostering self-esteem, confidence, and healthy lifestyle choices.

5. Relationships: Building strong and healthy relationships, communication skills, and conflict resolution.

6. Changing Me: Addressing sex and relationships education within the context of managing change positively.

Our PSHE curriculum also intertwines with British Values and Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) development, reflecting our school's values and ethos.

Impact: Preparing for Today and Tomorrow

As a result of our PSHE and RSE curriculum, pupils at Drybrook Primary leave us ready to approach a variety of life situations with the skills, attributes, and understanding necessary for modern life. They are on their journey to becoming healthy, open-minded, respectful, and responsible citizens who value diversity and are equipped to apply British Values in their daily lives.

Pupils will have learned to manage their emotions, care for their mental health, and cultivate positive relationships. They will understand the physical aspects of RSE at an age-appropriate level, hold respect for themselves and others, and possess a positive self-esteem. Our pupils will depart as individuals who not only value their health and well-being but also have the confidence and skill to actively contribute to their community and society at large.
